Featured Critters

Daisy, Petunia, Violet and Sweet Pea

These girls are about six months old. One has a home, but the other three are still waiting. (Only two are pictured here, but they all have similar markings.) They are very gentle and friendly, although they are still a little shy around people. Their foster mom believes, if they are separated so they're not in a pack all the time, they will warm up. Precious's Page (In Memory)

This page is dedicated to Precious, Michelle's best friend. Precious spent 18 years giving Michelle unconditional love before she passed on, and Michelle will forever love and miss her. For those of us who consider our critters our best friends, the emptiness of losing them can be unbearable at times. This page was created to help us share our happy memories, pay tribute, and hopefully to ease some of the sadness of their loss. If you have a special critter you would like us to add, please send their information and pictures to acritterschanceinc@comcast.net

Kustard (Kuster)

Kustard came to us merrily by chance. One night on the anniversary of my father’s passing, September 1, 2008, we heard what seemed to be a distressed wildlife critter. So at 11:30 pm we decided to investigate and help out if we could. As we made it through some tall grasses and then finally tall, dried reeds, it appeared to be a puppy whimpering! We hadn’t heard anyone calling for him, we took him in as it was late. The next day, I took off work to set out to find his owners. I did everything I could think of, however, as time passed it was as it was meant to be that we didn’t find the owners. We took him in as our “baby” of 3 months. He was so precious to my husband and I. He had our other pets for brothers and sisters. He was developing into a “fine young man." By 1 year he was nearly perfect as a puppy should be. Unfortunately, he was overtaken by histoplasmosis. I had taken him to the vet since the first sign of any illness and nearly every day until his death. Needless to say, we are terribly saddened, and it seemed as though our world stopped. A month later, we found the need to give our love we had saved for Kustard and decided to give it to another needy puppy, named Kister. Although, Kustard’s memory will live on and on, we are blessed to have known him and to now know Kister. - LeeAnn

Noah

Noah was a broken creature when I met him. He didn't seem to care for much attention from people unless he had his way in every situation. I believe he saw us to be his enemy in many ways. I can't say that I blamed him for that in the least. He went through so many things in his life and hardly seemed to have a chance to live it. Going from foster to foster, never finding a place to call home. He made his way back and forth into the rescue shelter and at one point lived a stray's life.

Noah had an eye for adventure though. When he did have a family, he decided to go after chickens with some other dogs in his pack. It landed him 40 days of confinement. I feel this is something like breaking the heart of any animal, to be confined without attention or any sign of freedom. It saddens me to think he never felt real love or family before, only the dragging back and forth from cage to cage.

But then for some reason, I decided to skim over Petfinder.com. I don't really know what I was looking for, I didn't even know I was looking. He caught my eye with his unique beauty...and after reading his story I thought I may be the only person to give him a real chance. When I met him, my heart was wide open. While we walked together, he listened to me when I talked or commanded him. Even when they told me he wouldn't listen at all. I had to foster him, see if I could get through and help him be a "better" pet. After a couple months of rough times (and a couple bite marks) Noah became this incredibly loving and kind soul. He just wanted to be in the center of everything and everyone. He would come up and put his head against me and just stand that way. He gave kisses and learned new commands quickly. His personality was amazing. Within the last couple months, Noah's health began to fail. After a long battle, he was found to have multiple bleeding masses/tumors within his gastro-intestinal tract. His red cell count dropped drastically within a few days and he didn't have enough strength to get through any more treatments, tests or surgeries. I did the only thing left that I could do, let him go peacefully. I told him how loved he was, how much my life would never be the same and that I would miss him. I reassured him that very soon, he would be at peace and everything would be okay....with tears in my eyes I said goodbye to one of the best friends I have ever known.

While I type this, I again feel the sting of tears in my eyes...I just hope that others will be so kind as to open their hearts and minds to an animal that needs them. I once read that "To love and be loved, is to feel the sun from both sides." Noah always brought a ray of sunshine into everyday, and I will never forget his friendship with me and mine. - Trish
